Plant Description:
This is a prolific vine producing edible fruits in the warm season. Taste is crunchy when raw, pickled, and has sweeter flavor when cooked, especially in stir fry, or roasting. This variety holds texture well when cooked whereas other varieties get soft faster. When harvested young the spikes are soft. Tips of the young stems is edible. This variety seem to deter critters from taking your food due to the spiky nature of the fruit.
In zone 10, the chayote vine is currently at its 3rd year of producing fruits.
How to grow:
Bury the fruit, AKA seed, laying down with half of the seed above soil level. Grows best in part sun to full sun. Plant in well drained soil, keep soil moist. The vine grows in spring and summer, but can be a perennial when grown in southern region, and somewhere with mild winter.
