Rock Samphire Plant

$28.00

♥What's unique about this plant?

Rock Samphire (Crithmum maritimum) AKA Sea Fennel is a perennial wild vegetable/herb with high antioxidants, and rich vitamins A, C, E, K, calcium, iodine, and other minerals.  This wild food contains iodine which is usually not found in plants that live on land.  We normally turn to kelp or other sea plants for our source of iodine.  However, non-polluted, non-irradiated sea plants or seaweeds can be difficult to find; thus, growing your own would be more convenient, and you'll know if it is safe to eat!

Sodium in Rock Samphire help our muscles communicate better with each other so our muscular systems can work more efficiently.  This wild food also promotes bone health, kidneys and bladder health, anti-aging, tissue repair, brightening skin, and so much more!

Rock Samphire is in the carrot family.  This wild food is usually found growing on rocks, rocky shores, and sea cliffs in places such as Southern and Western Coasts of Britain, Ireland, Western Coasts of Europe, Mediterranean, Northern Africa and the Black Sea.  The succulent blue green leaves get their mineral rich salty flavor from ocean mists so this plant can tolerate higher sodium content in soil than most plants.

How to Use
The leaves and stems are edible.  The aroma of this plant is similar to the Ashitaba plant which has the combination of celery, carrot and parsley aroma and taste.  Leaves can be harvested for pickling, sautéed, juicing and make smoothies.  Leaves can be harvested to dry and crushed to use in replaced of salt.

How to Grow
Hardiness zone 5-10.  Rock Samphire grows about 2-3 ft tall, and spreads in width.  It makes a beautiful ground cover or bush.  Grows well in full or part sun.  In Southern California inland  (zone 10), summers reached 105F at times, but this plant showed no stress from dry heat in full sun.  Best to grow in well drained soil.  Stays as green even at around 33F nights. In order to enrich the mineral content of the soil and to increase the salty taste in the plant I like to add 1-2 teaspoon of sea salt diluted in water monthly to feed the plant.  Sea salt is diluted in the water enough that I do not taste the salt.

Shipping Info
To my friends in HAWAII -- Since shipping live plants to the State of Hawaii are required to be shipped bare root, or in soil-less medium, I cannot ship this plant since I cannot guarantee the life of it upon arrival.  Ashitaba has sensitive roots.  If you have any questions, please contact me.  Mahalo!

If you are purchasing more than 1 item please contact me for combined shipping rates. Thanks!
