ChilliFlor Pepper — Nepalese Bell–Type

ChilliFlor is a rare, highly productive pepper grown for its beautiful flower-like shape, fruity flavor and satisfying crunch.

This seed line was introduced to me as ChilliFlor after the pepper was encountered in Mexico and brought back by someone who loved it. He named it ChilliFlor because the fruits resemble little flowers—flor means “flower” in Spanish. Based on its appearance, flavor, growth habit and cold tolerance, it closely resembles the pepper commonly sold as Nepali or Nepalese Bell, although its exact identity has not been formally verified.

Plants grow quickly in warm weather and can reach 4–5 feet tall with a shrub-like form. In full sun, a few healthy plants can produce hundreds of peppers. The fruits ripen from green to yellow, orange and finally red, sometimes becoming so heavy that the branches need support.

The peppers are sweetest when fully red. Their heat is generally mild but unpredictable—not every pepper will be spicy, even on the same plant. After several growing seasons and generations of volunteer seedlings, my plants have produced mostly sweet peppers with only an occasional mild kick. Grow ChilliFlor primarily for its flavor and productivity rather than for consistent heat.

ChilliFlor thrives during hot summer weather and often produces another flush of fruit in late fall. In my Zone 9–10 garden, established plants have also tolerated winter days around 38–55°F and a few nights near 32°F better than many other pepper varieties.

Grow in full sun with fertile, well-draining soil, regular watering and occasional organic fertilizer. The peppers are delicious fresh or used in salads, pickles, ferments, salsa, stir-fries, soups and roasted stuffed-pepper dishes.
